Importance of the Mediterranean

In total, the so-called Mediterranean region covers almost 4 million square kilometers. This means that it covers almost one percent of the earth’s surface. For cultural and climatic reasons, both Portugal and Jordan are also assigned to the Mediterranean region, although they do not have any part of the sea coast. Several large rivers flow into the Mediterranean Sea. These include the Nile, the Ebro, the Rhone, the Cheliff and the Po.

The olive as a symbol of the Mediterranean countries

Typical of the Mediterranean region is the gnarled olive tree. Therefore, a logic of the definition of the Mediterranean region follows the following idea: all countries where the olive grows, or could grow, belong to the Mediterranean region.

However, this idea is, of course, somewhat vague, because the olive tree grows elsewhere in the world.
